A traffic study
is the collection and analysis of measurable factual data relating to
traffic and its characteristics. Traffic studies are carried out to:
- Provide a basis for planning and designing traffic facilities,
including the selection of geometric standards, economic analysis,
and the determination of priorities.
- Assist traffic operation by determining the need for traffic
control devices such as signs, traffic control signals, pavement
markings, and school and pedestrian crossings.
- Evaluate the effect of changes made for traffic by conducting
before and after studies.
- Determine the basic characteristics and the general laws of
traffic behavior.
